Scribes Announces 2024 Best Brief Award Winners

Scribes—The American Society of Legal Writers—is pleased to announce the winners of its 2024 Best Brief Award, a prestigious honor recognizing exceptional legal writing by law students participating in interscholastic moot court competitions across the nation.

First place went to the South Texas College of Law Houston team that competed in the Health Law Moot Court Competition. The student brief writers were Madelyn Chidester, Joshua Fojtik, and Armon Mehrinfar. Professor Rob Galloway coached the team. Teams from South Texas have placed first, second, or third in eleven years since 2007. In 2012, the school won all three awards.

Southwestern Law School’s ABA Moot Court Competition team won second place with a brief written by Sam Johnson. Professor Catherine Carpenter coached the team.

Three additional received Finalist designations:

  • Southwestern Law School’s Robert F. Wagner National Labor and Employment Law Moot Court Team. Krisy Ngo wrote the brief, and Professor Chris Cameron coached the team.
  • Texas Tech University School of Law’s ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition Team. Brooke Brewer wrote the team, and Professor Robert T. Sherwin coached the team.
  • University of California College of the Law, San Francisco’s National Moot Court Competition Team. Zoe Gallagher and Isabelle Granucci wrote the brief, and Professor Toni Young and attorney Madison Boucher coached the team.

Scribes applauds the dedication and skill displayed by all the finalists, who exemplify the power of clear, persuasive, and impactful legal writing.
